On the couch moments-
Whenever I am asked to list the people in my life who inspire me most, Maciek is at the very top of said list. In the middle of the fall semester of 2011, I "adopted" him as my international buddy during his exchange at Appalachian. "Keiko, my APP Peer is useless, no help at all," were his words to me as we stood on the staircase of a crowded international flag hallway. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship--O how little we knew in that moment... In those days, time seemed to stand still.
Three years later, after spending Christmas of 2012 with his family in Poland, I returned to see him live out a dream that birthed during the 2011 semester. A dream to produce and host a radio show in his Polish city, but in English. I'll never forget the night he, Kelsey and I sat on his couch as he spoke of said dream. The radio station didn't believe in it at the time, but Maciek kept pursuing, he never let another's reluctance stop him. Two years later, I sat on the same couch as he spoke of the radio show that came to pass.
If you ask me who inspires me, I'll tell you: my friends. My friends are my inspiration. No matter how famous or successful they may become in the worlds standards, I will always remember those couch moments. The sacred moments where dreams are thrown into the universe only to manifest. And the thing is, we never quite know how long it will take until they become our reality. We just know they will.
I had the honor of being a guest in Maciek's reality, with two other Poles, one who studied at my university, and the other who studied in Buffalo, NY. We spoke of my country and what it's like to study there. It was magical, nerve-racking, and thrilling! I found myself caught in the euphoria of living in a dear friend's dream, with him. It was so perfect, natural even. And then I realized, our dreams were never meant to remain bound between the lined pages of a journal. Our dreams were never meant to be dreams at all...
